The piece “Requiem”, specially commissioned for the festival by Elena Bashkirova, is unique in many ways. 5 musicians are circling around a grand piano which lid is open, performing a strange but fascinating tribal-like ritual, which is foreign to the listener and the viewer. In 10 continuous parts, the piece explores the various possibilities of the instrument well beyond the keyboard, and creates an array of sounds which evokes recollection of percussion and even string instruments. Although it is unclear what is the ceremony for, the audience is invited to find their own meaning to the piece’s mystery

Requiem of Peace is a 10 movement composition for choir and small orchestra that was conceived after the tragic events of 9/11. The 7th movement was the first movement composed. The rest of the movements evolved upon reflection while watching the pain, the chaos and the violence that day. It vividly reminded me that the struggle for peace is needed now more than ever. It is a Requiem “of” peace instead of a traditional requiem “to” something. There is a musical theme that permeates throughout several of the movements. This is the theme the listener should take with them from the performance. It is the “musical” plea for peace during these trying times in our world!

The Elegiac Music to the Memory of Yuri Falik (1936–2009) refers to 2009. It’s pierced with mourning, but high mood, sentimental motifs and romantic vision of the composer’s life as if through the cinematography.
The final part reminds of Falik’s chorus “The Unknown Lady” to A. Block’s verses.
The Elegiac Music was performed for the first time on March 5, 2010 in the Glazunov (Small) Hall of the St. Petersburg Conservatoire. The concert was called “Tribute to Teacher”. Among the performers were Ekaterina Krasko (soprano), Women’s Choir of the St. Petersburg N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov Music College conducted by Sergei Yekimov, Chamber Orchestra of the Petersburg Conservatoire conducted by Alim Shakhmametyev and Sergei Yekimov (piano part).
