Omnes requiescimus: “all of us rest.” True universals through human diversity are hard to come by, but across space and time, all humans must die. It was this universality which attracted me to the theme of death. It poses a fascinating dichotomy, a bewildering variety of behaviors and beliefs which spring up from a universally shared experience. It is a potent event, and we all spend our whole lives aware of its coming. Many religious notions of death and afterlife are shadowed with a vague sense of anxiety: if anything comes next, it might be better but it also might be worse, and the latter option seems to weight heavier on the collective human conscience.
I had originally envisioned bringing together texts from around the world into a comprehensive exploration of the death experience but in the end, the project was cut down to a single text, the Roman Catholic requiem mass. I was challenged to see how a single text could achieve the original intent of the project but the requiem mass has become remarkably secularized, allowing the project to move beyond the Catholic tradition. What work I did with other texts was not in vain; although they are not explicitly manifested in the final project, I gained from them musical and poetic influences, ideas and notions about death which creatively influenced the final shape of the piece.
