In this sonata Gustav Merkel has incorporated 2 chorales "Aus tiefer Noth" and "Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern". He did it really in a sublime way. Actually these two chorales are contrasts: the depth and darkness of the distress and the height and brightness of the morning star. I play this sonata on my "own'" organ. It has been made in 1864 by the Dutch organ builder Van Oeckelen. There are three movements: 1. Grave - Fuga (moderato) 2. Adagio molto (at 7:06) 3. Introduction (Allegro risoluto) - Fuga (poco moderato) (at 14:22)
