Born in Kiev. He studied composition privately with Reinhold Glière and Mikhail Chernov and then at the Kiev Conservatory with Felix Blumenfeld and Boris Liatoshinsky, where he also took conducting classes with Nikolai Malko. He became a prominent teacher at the Kiev Conservatory and also edited works by some of his Ukrainian predecessors.
